The 44th session on the UN’s Human Rights Council is currently underway. The Special Rapporteur Mr Dainius Pūras released a statement, available here to read and download (PDF and Word) in several languages.
This is the strongest endorsement so far of the UNCRPD, where the Special Rapporteur asks for a rights-based global agenda for advancing the rights to mental health for all. While appreciative of medical and other interventions, he speaks about the failure to stop human rights violations in the name of care, which still include coercion, disempowerment and social injustice. He insists that actions needed must move beyond the medical to the holistic, and must be rooted in the lived experiences of those affected.
We at Mad in Asia Pacific are delighted with this strong document and will be bringing out an analysis of this report soon.
